Sssh. Here’s an insight into the horticultural retail world. Most (not all) retail nurseries fall into two categories:
A. The nursery that wants high turnover and doesn’t really care about how this is achieved. European plants are bought in bulk, already potted in usually an unsuitable inferior compost, in full flower. Mark up is applied and they go out for sale. Downside of this for the customer is that plant has probably reached its peak before you plant it.
B. Plug plants are bought usually Feb to Mar, these are then potted into basic multi purpose compost into 1 or 2 litre pots. From late March (or after approx 8 weeks) these are offered for sale starting at £5.99 and costing as much as £12.99. Downside for the customer is that creating a garden or filling containers can easily become expensive.
How do I know this? My background is in retail propagation department management.
Here at Southwold Succulents all of our plants are British grown and propagation is done on site in Suffolk. A superior mix of my own chemical free enriched compost mix is used throughout the growing process.
I have a small private nursery and concentrate my growing on five categories of plants:
Hardy Sedum plug plants.
Orostachys plug plants.
Larger specimen sedums 9cm plants.
Delosperma plug plants.
Sempervivums with strong seasonal changes, adding evergreen textures and tones to their companion plants.
Pride is taken sourcing rare varieties, many grown from seed.
My hardy sedums and Delosperma are supplied as fully rooted plug plants size approximately 3-5cm each depending on month of propagation. The bigger varieties of specimen sedums are supplied as 9cm young plants. These are much more budget friendly, making multiple purchases affordable and economical for the customer. Growth is rapid during spring and summer, a plug plant can easily fill a six inch space in a growing season. The plug plants are ready to be planted out immediately upon delivery. This is the size of my plants I use March to Aug for planting up arrangements.
The 9cm plants will quickly establish into full size perennials in their first year.
